Nice, but isn’t the “Santa muerte”, is a “calaverita de azúcar” or sugar skull. The Santa muerte is a Mexican dark goddess almost like the devil, and a sugar skull is a candy for the day of the dead.

We in México don't make costumes of "La Santa Muerte" we make "Catrinas" or Sugar Skulls as you'll call them in English, "Catrinas" or even "Muertes" (Skeletons/ the death itself) are pretty much representation of death one based on a famous paint called "La Catrina" witch is a joke of death dressed as a colonial woman ( we also have a male version of her called "Catrín"). On the other side you find "La Santa Muerte", but she isn't part of the celebration we make on November, she's kinda a god (st.) for some people, like catholic figures but in a very dark way, so you can ask her bad things and she should help ya out with a condition. Also she wear super dark and long clothes and represents the evil. I been follow this channel for a long time, love your job❤ I'm almost a fan.

While I love the majority of the work you do, I cannot get behind this video. First, the Santa Muerte looks very much like the grim reaper. So your video title is inaccurate. Second, this is very much cultural appropriation. Sugar skulls are a beautiful part of Mexican tradition. It is one thing to honor and appreciate, but another to take someone's culture and tradition and make it into this myopic, empty representation without any of the richness of the culture.

As Mexican I have to admit that I love this, idk who did you do this bc it looks hard haha but it's really cool. Btw La Santa Muerte & The Sugar Skull are total different things, also La Catrina lol But I still thinking that this is an awesome make up, love u Ellie <3

please don't do this if you aren't Mexican. the sugar skull was used to honor the dead on the day of the dead and making it a makeup or costume is stripping away it's meaning. don't tell "but culture is supposed to be shared" no it's not it's suppose to be sacred tradition and not something for white people to take.

Da Faq Having been to Mexico myself during the day of the dead festivals and admiring the culture and beautiful style of their art, I painted a sugar skull on my face for this Halloween. Not because I'm a 'thieving white guy' but because I adore their fantastic tradition and style.

I know. But i'm sure if someone does it, that meas that he/she likes and respects that look. Besides, there is an animation movie called "Book of Life" and this video might be inspired in that. ;)

@Sonia Oliveira that's the point it's not some costume
    • Sonia Oliveira

+Monica Partida It's your opinion. No need to be racist. It's just a joke for carnival or halloween. I'm sure who did it didn't mean to offend.

Is it bad I kinda see this as cultural appropriation? I mean my culture is not a costume
    • thatcreggcell

Not at all, I believe. It's your culture and seeing other people use what's part of your traditions as a costume, maybe not knowing the story behind it and its meaning, can be offensive. Not my culture though, since we don't celebrate Día de los Muertos in CR, but still, I understand.
    • Living Dead Girl

I'm pretty sure this is a way of appreciating it more than anything. And you know what? LOTS of cultures are made into costumes, and can look damn good that way. That being said, I can sorta understand why you're offended, although I don't agree with it at all.

idk sometimes people romanticize the day of the dead as like something beautiful and sexy and it is beautiful but its to honor and remember loved ones

      @Fairly Bent exactly
    • Mia L.

@Monica Partida right right like its not something people toy around with its an actual tradition to honor the deceased

Más bien sería, una ''Catrina'. Acá en México se le llama así, aunque es gusto del propio autor del video nombrar su maquillaje.

Your videos are wonderful and the makeup is awesome but I don't think they're really tutorials as you're not telling anyone anything (ie: what brushes you use, what paints, eye shadows, lashes, where to get anything, how to blend, etc.) they're more just what they are. For example instead of the title you have it should probably just be "Santa Muerte Sugar Skull Makeup".
    • Bethany Marty

@Usagi Felton Agreed, this isn't a tutorial it's just a video showing parts of the process
