The Conehead experiment failure tutorial

By  |

In 1993 Paramount Pictures brought us this insane science fiction comedy directed by Steve Barron, and starring Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, and Michelle Burke. In an effort to recreate a conehead we headed (no pun intended) to the studio and started working. But things didn’t turn out like we thought. So this is rather an sfx tutorial about a failed makeup, but you can still learn something.

im very late. but maybe making a clay mold in the shape that you want and using the liquid latex to make a prosthetic. then filling it with tissue or something to hold the shape. and using the sculpting gel to blend on the face. idk just a thought.

@ellimacs you could use cusion form and glue it to the thinkness you want and the shape it the way you want. Kinda like how a drag queen does the hip pads. I'm actually looking into doing this. I was also considering using panty hoes to stretch over it and give it a skinish tone.

what you need to do is get everything the lightest color that you are working with first then go in with the darker color because a foundation or creme paint simply isn't going to be 100% full coverage so it will look a little different based on what background that you give it to work with. If you found a foundation or creme paint similarly colored to the bald cap and applied that to his face, let that set, and put on the flesh colored foundation over everything again might not have such a dramatic color difference. it might seem stupid to change his face color just to change it back but i think that it will work. also I'm pretty sure that the cone heads have some wrinkles in their head so if you put those right where the bald cap meets the skin that might cover it up a bit but it would looker better on a model with a tall forehead

I found a cone head baled cap that worked but I have to much hair and a big head it did not fit all the way but I still looked like a great alien

Just cover with latex no bald cap or make a gelatin mold for the head. You Don't have to do the whole head just the outside to smooth it and add a foundation color to match.

Since everybody else is talking about colors and stuff what I would recommend was to put a bald cap on the model first so you wouldn't have had to worry so much of the second overlap to cover his head. I don't know how it would work but it sounded good in my head so I thought I would share

what you could of done is place a color that is 2 or 3 shades darker then the baled cap and then placed the skin tone on top of the brown😀

Color matching is super difficult. I've found that if you put down a darker color over the latex first, then go with lighter colors it seems to blend much better! It's worked pretty well for me. Also Stuart Bray has some wonderful videos on color matching! Love you guys and I hope this helped anyone reading! -Jaye

Just a tip, if you put a flesh color straight on a prostetic or sfx piece it only shows that color only, the human skin has sevral colors integrated into it like red for the blood and capillaries that are under the skin, you can also use blue which make it look like there is veins underneath the skin, but if the color is to light use a brown water activated paint dilute it ALOT with water and stipple it all over and use more water to make it less patchy same goes or when the color is to dark but instead use white :)

A good way to fix colors it apply a dark brown color (doesn't matter grease, water etc.) on top of your bald cap, then apply the same foundation color over the face and head. Like color correcting SFX style!☺️

  67. You could probably use a lighter or darker foundation so when it dries it would be lighter or darker.Im no makeup expert so I don't know what I'm talking about, but in my mind it seems like it would work

I think you should have used wax to help blend the bald cap with the skin and soothe it out better
  75. You can just put a bold cap on and get tin foil and layer it until you get it as high as you want
